Catholic Schools Week
Girls playing broomball during Catholic Schools Week

Catholic Schools Week is an annual event that builds an appreciation of the educational achievements and spiritual benefits of attending a Catholic school. It acknowledges the thousands of teachers and students who work in these schools, and celebrates the opportunities that Catholic Schools have to offer.

This year, IHMS celebrated Catholic Schools Week from Monday, February 8 to Friday, February 12. The theme for 2010 was “Faith, Knowledge, Discipline, Morals - Dividends for Life”. During these 4 days (Friday was a holiday for the students), the student council and staff organized a fun group of activities.

The week kicked off on Tuesday when the student council sold Rice Krispie cakes for 25¢ a piece as a part of their ongoing fund-raising activity.

On Wednesday morning, the K-3 students experienced musical performer and former IHMS teacher Maryka Chabluk. Mrs. Chabluk, who taught Music during part of the 2001-2002 school year while Mrs. Stanowych was on maternity leave, incorporated the K-3 students into songs by having them role play various scenes while dressed in costume.

On Wednesday afternoon, the 4-6 students spent the afternoon doing three different activities

:1) Square dancing

2) Broomball

3) Watching a video on the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics

Thursday was NUT day - “No Uniforms Today”. Everyone was encouraged to wear red or white in celebration of Valentine’s Day, which was on Sunday. A lot of students exchanged Valentine’s day cards, especially in the younger grades, but since IHMS is trying to promote healthier eating in the school, passing out candies or chocolates was discouraged.

In addition, on Thursday there was a 1:00 p.m. assembly in the school gym. Students from different grades represented their classes by participating in a series of activities known as the “Moo-lympics”.

Since all prizes were donated by the Manitoba Milk Marketing Board, the Moo-lympics was made up of activities such as:

1. Moo Off
2. Speed Skating
3. Ski Jumping
4. Curling
5. Biathlon
6. Alpine Skiing
7. Milk Chug

Friday, February 12th, the last day of Catholic Schools Week, was an inservice day for the teachers at the Caboto Centre on Wilkes. While IHMS teachers (and teachers from other Catholic schools) were busy attending the inservice, students had a day off from school. Since the following Monday was a holiday - Louis Riel Day - it was a long 4 day weekend for the students and a great way to finish off a fun and exciting week!

This year’s Catholic Schools Night at the Manitoba Moose hockey game was on Saturday, Feb. 6 when the Moose took on the San Antonio Rampage (Winnipeg won 4-3 in a shootout). Tickets were $20 each, which included a seat for the game (regularly priced at $23), and with every ticket purchased the buyer received a complimentary Manitoba Moose workbook and a Mick E. Moose bobblehead. In addition, each ticket purchased was accompanied by a voucher redeemable for a Breyer’s ice cream treat at the game.
