The IHMS grade 4-8 track and field meet was held on Tuesday, May 3rd at Sisler High School. Sisler is located off of Shaughnessy St. between Redwood and Burrows. The students were taken to the site by two chartered school buses.

This year, the weather was cool and windy in the morning, but as the afternoon approached, the weather started to improve. The track at Sisler is on a large open field, so there is very little protection from the weather.

Students from grade 4, 5, and 6 were required to take part in all track and field events. The junior high students, on the other hand, were able to sign up for whatever they wanted, as long as they chose a minimum of three events.

The 4-6 events were:
• Ball throw
• 60 m race
• 200 m race
• 800 m race

The 7-8 events were:
• Shot put

• 100 m race
• 200 m race
• 800 m race
• 1500 m race

Two or more teachers supervised each event:

• Mrs. Stanowych and Mr. Maguire were in charge of shot put and discus.
• Mrs. Halayda and Mrs. Wittevrongel were in charge of ball throw.
• Mrs. Naurocki, Mrs. Skakun, Mrs. Wdowiak, Mr. Dedio, and Mr. Dram ran the    races and recorded each racer’s time.

In addition, Mrs. Korban, Breanne Korban, Mr. and Mrs. Korchynski, Mr. Smaczylo, Mr. Lysack, Mr. Galarnyk, and Mr. Romaniuk were some of the volunteers that helped throughout the day. Mr. Picklyk, our school principal, also showed up to support all the students who were involved in their events.

Long jump, one of the usual track and field events, was postponed because of construction of the newly built gym at Sisler. As a result, the long jump pits were unavailable for the second year in a row. Long jump will be held at IHMS at a later date along with high jump. High jump is usually done in the school gym during Phys. Ed. classes.

For lunch, the students were given the choice of one or two hot dogs freshly barbequed by parent volunteers. Students were also given a bag of chips and a choice of a juice box (orange, apple, peach and orange, or grape juice).

The kids had fun and enjoyed participating in the events despite the chilly weather and strong winds. The chartered buses returned to Sisler just after 2:00 p.m. to transport the exhausted students back to IHMS.

The winners for the different events will move on to represent our school at the “Knights of Columbus Track and Field Meet” at the end of May.
